Where do you see yourself in five years from now? Do you have a ‘big dream’ for your career or business, perhaps you want to make changes to your health? Aiming high and dreaming big is commendable. But that big dream may not happen if you don’t set goals to determine a clear path towards it. It takes hard work, determination and smart planning to get where you want to go.
Here are 5 ways you can start making your big dream a reality.
1. Research your dream
Perhaps you’re uncertain about what you need to do to make your dream a reality. Luckily we live in the age of the internet. Somewhere out there, someone is doing exactly what you want to do, and chances are they’ve mapped out what you need to know. Take a leaf out of their book and start putting together all the information you need to make your dream happen.
For example, you may want to start your own business. After researching someone who’s started their own business your questioning may go like this:
• Do I have all the right skills?
• If not, what training or study do I need?
• How much will this training/study cost?
• Can I study while working at my present job?
• Do I have the funds to start my own business?
• Am I eligible for a bank loan?
• And so on...
2. Make a plan
Once you’ve asked the right questions and have all the information you need you can start putting together a plan. A plan is key to living your dream life because it shows you exactly what you need to do and gives you a clear path to get there. Many people have big dreams but just ‘wing it’ and hope for the best. But a well thought out plan is a better approach.
Your plan should take all the known factors you can think of into consideration, of course there are plenty of unknown factors that could sideswipe your plan but you can deal with them as they crop up.
3. Take small steps
The best way to accomplish something big is to approach it in small daily activities, not big leaps and bounds. This applies to any large task, goal, or project. For instance, if you want to start running a marathon in a year, don’t start out with a 5 km run, start with a small run and slowly increase it over time to reach your larger goal. Achieving small goals along the way also allows you to enjoy the journey of getting there.
4. Get the right support
Do you have people in your life that support you? If there are people in your circle that don’t get it and make their opinion known, it can be incredibly soul destroying. We all have negative voices in our heads that tell us we can’t do things. Listening to someone who’s telling you that you can’t achieve your dream is a self-fulfilling prophecy - you probably won’t. Surround yourself with people who are supportive and find like-minded people to inspire you.
5. Schedule & remove roadblocks
Make your dream part of your daily schedule by blocking out time for it in your calendar. By making it a priority you’re saying to yourself “this is what is most important to me”. But inevitably you’ll have roadblocks that could lead you away from your dream. You might have to get radical about these if you feel yourself losing sight of your goals.
Some potential roadblocks could be:
• Toxic relationships
• Influential friends with negative behaviours
• Wasting time on social media or watching hours of TV
• Fear of change
After all, you only have so many hours in a day and spending it on negative or unproductive behaviours won’t help you achieve your dream and make it a reality. If you feel worried or anxious about change, it can be helpful to spend some time each day doing visualisation work on what you want your future life to look like to keep you on track.
